UN Mandate Virtually Worthless In Stopping Somali Pirates

Surprise!

Somali pirates struck again yesterday, seizing an Iranian cargo ship holding 30,000 tonnes of grain, as the world’s governments and navies pronounced themselves powerless against this new threat to global trade.

Admiral Michael Mullen, the US military chief, pronounced himself stunned by the pirates’ reach after their capture of the supertanker Sirius Star and its $100 million (£70 million) cargo. Commanders from the US Fifth Fleet and from Nato warships in the area said that they would not intervene to retake the vessel.

The Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, the owner of the ship, condemned the hijacking as an “outrageous act” that required international action.

Here it comes

Pirates pulled the 333m supertanker yesterday to a mooring point off Harardhere, on the Somali coast. Farther north, Italian, Greek, Turkish, British, American and Russian frigates and warships were patrolling the Gulf of Aden under a UN mandate.

Operations undertaken by the coalition fleet are fraught with legal difficulties, ranging from restrictive rules of engagement to rights of habeas corpus, as the British Navy discovered when it detained eight pirates after a shootout last week. Yesterday the detainees were passed on to Kenya, where efforts to prosecute them will be closely watched for precedent.

Here’s an idea: screw the United Nations. Here’s a group that has no military of its own, with leaders who mostly come from countries with tiny worthless militaries, trying to dictate the use of military forces. Those countries with navies who want to be involved should just go and blockade the Somali ports, where the majority of these pirates are coming from, and stop all ships going out. Use those caught as target practice for live fire exercises. And, in the cases where ships are hijacked, let groups such as the Navy SEALS get their live fire, real world practice in.

BTW, there is also some surrender talk in the article regarding the thought that maybe they should just let the Islamic Court re-establish control of Somalia.

Say, ‘Memba When Israel Bombed The Snot Out Of A Syrian Plant?

Remember who so many on the left poo poo’d it, claiming it was just Israeli warmongering? And that the US was complicit? How’d that work out? Uranium found in Syria by UN nuclear inspectors

Syria has vehemently rejected Israeli and American claims that it was constructing a secret nuclear plant at the destroyed facility. However Damascus failed to bring its protests over the violation of its sovereignty during the attack to the United Nations Security Council.

Instead it razed the site, which was located near the Euphrates River near the border with Iraq, before granting access to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Diplomats in Vienna reported that inspectors had found uranium particles, despite the Syrian clean-up.

The composition of the material indicated that the facility was designed to process nuclear materials. “It was a man-made component, not natural (ore),” said one official accredited to the UN agency.

Well, I’m shocked, how about you? And, for those on the Left who don’t believe The Telegraph, maybe they will believe Al Jazeera.

Can You Guess Who The U.N. Wants To Win?

Yeah, pretty easy to guess. They even use a word that is verbotin in Liberal World in describing their hope for change

There are no “Obama 2008″ buttons, banners or T-shirts visible here at U.N. headquarters, but it might be difficult to find a sliver of territory in the United States more enthusiastic over the prospect of the Illinois senator winning the White House.

An informal survey of more than two dozen U.N. staff members and foreign delegates showed that the overwhelming majority would prefer that Sen. Barack Obama win the presidency, saying they think that the Democrat would usher in a new agenda of multilateralism after an era marked by Republican disdain for the world body.

Obama supporters hail from Russia, Canada, France, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Indonesia and elsewhere. One American employee here seemed puzzled that he was being asked whether Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was even a consideration. “Obama was and is unstoppable,” the official said. “Please, God, let him win,” he added.

Is a UN official allowed to say “God?” I know that Allah is allowed, and Gaia, but, “God?”

Of course, it is no wonder the United Nations would prefer Obama. They love getting more and more money from the United States, particularly when the U.N. doesn’t have to say it came from the U.S. During Dem administrations, the money tends to go up, and let us not be unmindful of Barack’s “Global Poverty Act,” which will transfer, at a minimum, an extra $845 billion to the UN coffers. They love when they are able to use legitimate programs, such as the Oil For Food program, to enrich themselves, even if fraudulently. They like when people like the UN. And they love when America is humbled and laid low before the world.

Conservatives who are skeptical of the United Nations said they are not surprised by the political tilt. “The fact is that most conservatives, most Republicans don’t worship at the altar in New York, and I think that aggravates them more than anything else,” said John R. Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. “What they want is the bending of the knee, and they’ll get it from an Obama administration.”

The UN is full of thugs, criminals, and countries that are dictatorships, many of them murderous. The UN Human Rights Councilis slightly better in membership then the previous Commission on Human Rights, but not by much. And, like in their own countries, they love to have control in the world. Multiculturalism is great, dialogue beyond reasonableness is supa!, and global warming as a means to control also rocks the vote

Speaking at a gathering of US environmental journalists last week, the chair of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said that the news media has not done enough to communicate the severity of global warming.

Like the media hasn’t already lost all standards of objectivity.
