Obama On Gitmo, Has The October 1 Mentality

Everyone talks about liberals having a September 10 mentality. Obama is going for the October 1st one

Obama said the government can crack down on terrorists “within the constraints of our Constitution.” He mentioned the indefinite detention of Guantanamo Bay detainees, contrasting their treatment with the prosecution of the 1993 World Trade Center bombings.

“And, you know, let’s take the example of Guantanamo,” Obama said. “What we know is that, in previous terrorist attacks — for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center — we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial. They are currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated.

“And the fact that the administration has not tried to do that has created a situation where not only have we never actually put many of these folks on trial, but we have destroyed our credibility when it comes to rule of law all around the world, and given a huge boost to terrorist recruitment in countries that say, ‘Look, this is how the United States treats Muslims. …

Let’s take a step back to October 1st, 1995. That was the day the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel-Rahman, was convicted of seditious conspiracy. His imprisonment was a rallying cry for Jihadi’s world wide, including Osama Bin Laden. The attack on the USS Cole was supposed to be part of a string of bombings to affect the release of Rahman (paragraph 8).

So, Obama is praising the police work and law enforcement as the only good way to deal with terrorists (I’m not saying that those methods are not wrong, just not the be all end all), yet, the incarceration of one man created a larger terrorist presence and point for attacks.

This is a dangerous tact. Thinking of terrorists as simple criminals will not change the opinions of terrorists. Excepting retreat and becoming Islamists ourselves, nothing will change the minds of the radical Islamists. Everything we do upsets them and is a cause for Jihad. If we try them and put them in prison (can we avoid putting more in Butner, NC, please? I did not realize he was residing at the federal correctional facility there, which is less then an hour away from where I live), they will be pissed off, and say we hate Islam. If we keep them at Gitmo, they will be pissed off. If we let them go, they will go back to Jihad, saying that they are mad because we caught their sorry asses on the battlefield.

Former CIA Director James Woolsey, who is advising the McCain campaign, concurred, saying Obama has “an extremely dangerous and extremely naive approach toward terrorism … and toward dealing with prisoners captured overseas who have been engaged in terrorist attacks against the United States.”

Particularly since Obama advisors are saying that they think Bin Laden should be able to appeal his case in US civilian courts if captured.

Send in Winnie The Pooh, Senator Short Term, er, Obama. He’ll give ‘em what for!
