Obama Loves Dat FISA Bill!

They are having meltdowns in Nutroot Land over Obama’s support of the new FISA bill

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) today announced his support for a sweeping intelligence surveillance law that has been heavily denounced by the liberal activists who have fueled the financial engines of his presidential campaign.

In his most substantive break with the Democratic Party’s base since becoming the presumptive nominee, Obama declared he will support the bill when it comes to a Senate vote, likely next week, despite misgivings about legal provisions for telecommunications corporations that cooperated with the Bush administration’s warrantless surveillance program of suspected terrorists.

obama seal bite meAnyone want to bet that, despite his pledged support, he doesn’t actually vote yea on the bill, instead, he will either vote present or not vote at all? That way, he can always change his mind, talk out of both sides of his mouth, and not have to actually take an official stand.

“Given the legitimate threats we face, providing effective intelligence collection tools with appropriate safeguards is too important to delay. So I support the compromise, but do so with a firm pledge that as president, I will carefully monitor the program,” Obama said in a statement hours after the House approved the legislation 293-129.

Yes, because he did a marvelous job in monitoriting Jeremiah Wright, his associations with Bill Ayers, what his wife was saying on the stump, and the filth on his official website’s community pages.

  • Greg Sargent is bummed out.
  • Digby is annoyed, because “Nothing is more associated with us than this issue.”
  • MyDD is not that surprised that Obama is punting the issue, and, regarding change, “We’ve done our part, now you do yours.” IMPORTANT WRIST SLITTING ALERT to follow.
  • Atrios names Obama Wanker Of The Day.
  • Liberal Values is “disappointed” but has “hopiness” that Obama might do the right thing, despite the view that Obama is acting like a typical politician.

Sock Puppet, who wrote some books, ya know! writes “Nobody should be fooled by Obama’s vow to work to remove telecom amnesty from this bill.” Don’t worry, Glenn, we won’t be.

He’s also pissed off at Pelosi, Hoyer, Emanual, and every Democrat who pushed the bill and voted for it. Watch out, he might start emailed Sybil-like!

This is interesting, though. There is a project by ACTBLUEPRO-TERRORIST to put some ugly ads into newspapers and such about the bill, and

Placing this as a full-page ad in The Washington Post (at an extremely discounted rate) is also the ideal way to announce the beginning of this campaign to all of them…. (emphasis mine)

So, how does this group get an “extremely discounted rate?” Would a pro-FISA bill group, say, one of the telecom PAC’s, get an extremely discounted rate if they wanted to put a pro-FISA bill ad in the Wash Post?

I would’ve thought “conservatives” would be against the telecom immunity provisions in the FISA bill also. Do you think about this stuff, or can you just not bring yourself to agree with a “liberal” point of view (I hate those terms, conservative and liberal. It puts us onto teams and gives us a “team mentality”. i.e. instead of having rational debate about each individual issue, people simply choose to oppose the “other team”…).

The wiretapping was unconstitutional. The door should be open for the telecoms to be sued for being complicit in that illegal activity. Retroactive legislation appears to be unconstitutional: “No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”. There seems to be debate over whether the telecom immunity clause really is unconstitutional or not - I am not a lawyer so I don’t know for sure.

Now, isn’t violating the constitution the worst sin a government can make in the eyes of “conservatives”? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought “conservatives” were generally patriotic, opposed legislation that was unconstitutional, opposed to big government, liked to balance the budget, etc etc… now isn’t the current administration essentially ignoring all that and going against “conservative” values? Do you really think McCain will be any different?

Also, your comment on the whole Reverend Wright thing. That kind of crap is just a distraction isn’t it? The media in this country is absolutely disgusting. Why talk about real issues when you can criticize Cindy McCain’s cookie recipes… ?

Politics is forever going to be a joke in this country unless the citizenry simply refuses to accept any more of this garbage. And that means both “sides” of the political spectrum. You can be damned sure progressives are sick and tired of the spineless Democratic party, are conservatives fed up with the GOP?

If people stopped feeling like the belonged to a team, maybe politics would actually improve….

  2. William Teach UNITED STATES says:

No, as a conservative I am not against immunity for the telecoms. I understand that no one was hurt, no ones constitutional rights were violated, and that if groups like the ACLU are allowed to sue the telecoms at will, juries will hand out huge rewards, regardless of what the evidence shows, and the companies will be out billions. That means far less money to employee people, develop new products and services, and expand coverage, among others. Go look up what happened to Dow Corning.

The telecoms did nothing wrong. I think you are also confusing what they are accused of. What they did was provided minimum data on phone calls which basically only included phone numbers, which were used to look for patterns of which number was calling other known terrorist owned and know terrorist area phone #’s. That’s it. It’s not ex post facto, because that type of law is about passing a law that makes past actions criminal. Matter of fact, that is what happened to Tom Delay.

As far as wiretapping goes, it was not wiretapping, per se. They were tapping into the satelites, not going down to the switching center. And, that has nothing to do with the telecoms. Conservatives believe in national security, and this, again, hurt no Americans. Unless some were dealing with Islamic extremists. Why would a warrant be needed to listen to people who are not US citizens? Out Constitution does not give them rights.

Jeremiah Wright is not a distraction. Obama is running his campaign mostly on his character, and Wright goes right to the heart of Obama’s shaky and shady character.

Political identification is a part of life. People have certain viewpoints, and we will not all agree. And, yup, you betcha we are sick of the GOP electacritters.
